Consistent signage at Cargill facilities around the world is important in helping us project the appropriate brand image. The guidelines provided in this section will help you create effective and functional signs that support our identity standards, while providing flexibility to design according to your own needs. These guidelines remain the same for the Cargill Brand and all Product Brand levels. If you are applying the logo to large–scale applications, such as storage tanks and elevators, refer to the guidelines for large structures. Guidelines are provided below for two categories of signage:
- Primary signage includes monument signs, signs mounted on buildings to identify a facility, and main entrance and reception area signs, where the Cargill logo is the primary identifier.
- Secondary signage includes internal directional signage throughout a building and external directional signage related to delivery, shipping, and parking where the reference to Cargill is secondary.
Note: Since we will longer use the signature lockups, when using a Business Unit name in text, the word “Cargill” must always precede the full BU name (Cargill Animal Nutrition). When using a Function Unit name in text, omit the word “Cargill” (Human Resources).
Sign Shapes
Three basic horizontal shapes are used to demonstrate a range of sign layout options. In addition, there are two optional shapes for special situations. These shapes are based on proportions, not on any unit of measure. The amount of copy determines layout. The three basic horizontal shapes are:
- Horizontal ratio 1:1.5
- Horizontal ratio 1:2
- Horizontal ratio 1:3

The two optional shapes are:
- Vertical ratio 1:1.5
- Square ratio 1:1

Typography
The following fonts should be used for sign content:
- Helvetica Neue Medium Condensed Oblique (used for Cargill Business Unit or facility name, when only one line is needed, or as the second and/or third line(s) below the bold first line)
- Helvetica Neue Bold Condensed Oblique (used as the first line when two or more lines are needed)

“L–height” Relationship
The height of the “L” in the Cargill logo is the unit of measure used to determine spacing when designing signage. To determine “L–height,” use the diagram below.

Clear Space
The clear space around the Cargill logo will vary depending on the structure in which the sign is placed. When the structure or frame is small or non–existent, the clear space should be designed using the minimum requirement (50% “L–height”) to ensure the dominance of the Cargill logo.

When the framing area is extremely wide, add more clear space, (greater than the minimum 50% “L–height”), to balance the Cargill logo.

Readability on Buildings
Follow these guidelines as closely as possible within building lease requirements, which may specify additional constraints on size, materials, color, and placement. Generally, when applying the logo to various building materials such as brick, concrete, metal or glass, the green and black logo is preferred, but the solid black or solid white version may be used where there is not sufficient contrast to provide maximum readability.

Primary Signage
Primary signage includes monument signs, signs mounted on buildings to identify a facility, and main entrance and reception area signs, where the Cargill logo is the primary identifier.
Cargill Logo Only
When placing only a Cargill logo on a sign, the center of the “L” in Cargill is the logo’s vertical centering point. You will notice a slightly narrower clear space at the top to balance the visual weight of the green logo banner.

Cargill Logo with One Line of Text
When designing signage using the Cargill logo and one line of text (such as an address, location, or Business Unit name):
- Use Helvetica Neue Medium Condensed Oblique.
- The cap–height of the text line should not exceed 50 percent of the “L–height” in the logo.
- Position the line of text approximately 65 percent of the “L–height” below the baseline of the Cargill logo, or on the baseline of the logo, if positioning it to the right.
- If you need to include the legal entity or Business Unit name, be sure to precede it with the word “Cargill,” and stack it centered below the logo, or as a second or third line if positioned to the right.

Cargill Logo with Two Lines of Text
When you design signage using the Cargill logo and two lines of text:
- Use Helvetica Neue Bold Condensed Oblique for the first line.
- Use Helvetica Neue Medium Condensed Oblique for the second line.
- The cap–height of the first line should not exceed 50 percent of the “L–height” in the logo.
- The cap–height of the second line should not exceed 75 percent of the cap–height of the first line.
- Position the first line approximately 65 percent of the “L–height” below the baseline of the Cargill logo, or on the baseline of the logo, if positioning it to the right.
- The second line should be positioned one “x–height” (the height of a lowercase letter without an ascender or descender, such as the “a” or “r” in Cargill) of the second line under the first line.
- If you are including a Business Unit name, be sure to precede it with the word “Cargill,” and stack it centered below the logo, or as a second or third line if positioned to the right.

Cargill Logo with Three Lines of Text
The layout with three lines of text is the same as with two lines of text, with the following modifications:
- The third line should be the same size as the second line.
- The space between the second and third line equal two “x–heights” (the height of a lowercase letter without an ascender or descender, such as the “a” or “r” in Cargill) of the third line.

Cargill Logo with Three Lines of Text and Destination Signifier
Destination signifier signs are used externally, when a specific facility’s location needs to be highlighted. The layout may include one, two or three lines of text with the final line as the destination signifier.
- Helvetica Neue Medium Condensed Oblique is used for the type, which is always reversed–out and centered inside the destination signifier bar.
- The size of the destination signifier type is the same or smaller than the bold type used in the first text line.
- The height of the destination signifier bar is 85 percent of the “L–height.”
- If you are including a Business Unit name, be sure to precede it with the word “Cargill,” and stack it centered below the logo, or as a second or third line if positioned to the right.

Building Entrance Signage
The Cargill logo should be positioned at eye–level, typically in the top one–fourth to one–third of the door. The logo should appear above any room number information. Adequate clear space should be provided on all sides of the logo. For a double door entrance, place the Cargill logo on the right door. No other text is allowed at entrances areas, including legal entity names, location, or Business or Function Unit names. Various materials and applications may be used, including cut–vinyl letters or frosted–glass techniques. A professional vendor should be consulted for specific and appropriate options.

Reception Area Signage
When placing the Cargill logo on the back wall of a reception area, ensure that the logo is positioned at eye–level — typically, five or six feet from the floor, or at least two to three feet above the reception desk. The black and green Cargill logo is preferred, but you may create it using a variety natural or synthetic media such as etched glass, carved wood or brushed aluminum, to better match interior color schemes. No other text is allowed at reception areas, including legal entity names, location or Business or Function Unit names.

Secondary Signage
In secondary signage, the content is more functional and is visually more prominent than the Cargill brand. Secondary signage includes internal directional signage throughout a building and external directional signage related to delivery, shipping, and parking.
Internal Directional Signage
Most building entrances and reception areas should have Cargill logo signage, to indicate that visitors are in a Cargill facility. Beyond the reception area, directional signage inside the building can be used to identify Business or Function Unit areas, and should utilize Helvetica Neue Oblique Medium Condensed type only (not the Cargill logo). Since we no longer use the signature lockups, when using a Business Unit name in text, the word “Cargill” must always precede the full BU name (Cargill Animal Nutrition). When using a Function Unit name in text, omit the word “Cargill” (Human Resources). Internal directional signage may be created using a variety natural or synthetic media such as etched glass, carved wood or brushed aluminum, to match interior color schemes.

External Directional Signage
External directional signage is used to direct visitors to delivery, shipping, and parking areas. Because Primary Signage may not have preceded these signs, it is important to include the Cargill logo, although with less prominence than on primary signage.
- The Cargill logo is placed in the lower–right corner.
- Helvetica Neue Medium Condensed Oblique is used for content type.
- Directional arrows may be added, when necessary.
